Review of embryology and its relation to ocular disease in the pediatric population
1Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago.
Insights
This review covers normal ocular development and common congenital anomalies in children. It explores potential causes of these developmental issues, aiding in understanding and diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Developmental Biology
- Pediatrics
Background:
- Normal ocular development is complex and prone to various malformations.
- Congenital ocular anomalies are frequently observed in pediatric populations.
- Understanding developmental pathways is crucial for identifying causes of eye malformations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To provide an overview of normal ocular development.
- To review common congenital anomalies of the eye in children.
- To discuss potential mechanisms underlying these maldevelopments.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of normal ocular development.
- Compilation and review of common congenital ocular anomalies.
- Discussion of etiological factors and developmental mechanisms.
Main Results:
- Detailed examination of ocular development areas prone to malformation.
- Identification of frequently occurring congenital eye anomalies.
- Exploration of pathogenic mechanisms leading to these anomalies.
Conclusions:
- A comprehensive understanding of normal development aids in recognizing deviations.
- Knowledge of anomaly mechanisms can inform diagnostic and potentially therapeutic strategies.
- This overview serves as a foundational resource for pediatric ophthalmology and developmental research.
Abstract:
This overview of normal ocular development concentrates on those areas that more commonly undergo maldevelopment, some of which are discussed in more detail in other papers in this Symposium. Many of the congenital anomalies routinely seen in children are reviewed and the possible mechanisms leading to these anomalies are discussed.
