Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Medical Genetics

Background:

  • Bilateral adrenal neuroblastoma is a rare pediatric malignancy.
  • Neuroblastoma often presents with metastatic disease, impacting organs like the liver.
  • Early detection through mass screening systems, like urinary VMA analysis, is crucial.

Observation:

  • Two infant cases of bilateral adrenal neuroblastoma are presented.
  • Patients presented with abdominal distension (hepatomegaly) and elevated urinary VMA.
  • Both infants were under one year of age and diagnosed with stage IVs neuroblastoma.

Findings:

  • Unilateral adrenalectomy was performed in both cases, with the contralateral tumor monitored.
  • Observed contralateral tumors showed spontaneous regression over time.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical progress was favorable in both patients, indicating a good prognosis.
  • Implications:

    • Observation of the contralateral tumor after unilateral adrenalectomy may be a viable management strategy for bilateral adrenal neuroblastoma.
    • Early detection and staging (Stage IVs) are critical factors for favorable outcomes.
    • This approach highlights the potential for conservative management in specific pediatric cancer cases.
