Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pain Medicine

Background:

  • Headache is a common neurological disorder.
  • Limb pain is a frequent complaint with various causes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence of limb pain in patients experiencing headaches.
  • To determine the prevalence of limb pain associated with headache.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 245 patients (185 women, 60 men) with headaches was evaluated.
  • Patients were assessed for the presence of limb pain in close temporal relation to headache episodes.

Main Results:

  • Eleven patients (4.4%) reported limb pain temporally related to headache.
  • The pain, predominantly in upper limbs, occurred concurrently with, before, or after headache.
  • Pain characteristics varied but were consistent within individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Limb pain associated with headache is a potentially underrecognized symptom.
  • This association may lead to misdiagnosis in clinical practice.
  • Further research is warranted to understand this phenomenon.
