Limb pain and headache

Summary

Headache can cause limb pain in some individuals. This study found limb pain occurring with headaches in 4.4% of patients, suggesting a potential link that may be underdiagnosed.

Background:

Headache is a common neurological disorder.
Limb pain is a frequent complaint with various causes.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the occurrence of limb pain in patients experiencing headaches.
To determine the prevalence of limb pain associated with headache.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 245 patients (185 women, 60 men) with headaches was evaluated.
Patients were assessed for the presence of limb pain in close temporal relation to headache episodes.

Main Results:

Eleven patients (4.4%) reported limb pain temporally related to headache.
The pain, predominantly in upper limbs, occurred concurrently with, before, or after headache.
Pain characteristics varied but were consistent within individuals.

Conclusions:

Limb pain associated with headache is a potentially underrecognized symptom.
This association may lead to misdiagnosis in clinical practice.
Further research is warranted to understand this phenomenon.
