Summary

This case report details a rare instance of Kaposi's sarcoma in the pericardium of a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Pericardial biopsy was crucial for diagnosing this cardiac manifestation of Kaposi's sarcoma in an AIDS patient.

Background:

  • Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is an opportunistic malignancy frequently associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
  • Cardiac involvement by KS is rare, particularly in the pericardium, presenting diagnostic challenges in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Observation:

  • A 31-year-old female intravenous drug user with HIV presented with recurrent cardiac tamponade.
  • Extensive KS involvement was noted across cutaneous, mucosal, lymph node, and likely pleuropulmonary sites.
  • Standard imaging (chest radiography, CT, echocardiography) and pericardiocentesis failed to identify the etiology of the pericardial effusion.

Findings:

  • Pericardial biopsy was the definitive diagnostic method, revealing characteristic Kaposi's sarcoma lesions.
