Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Healthcare Quality Improvement
  • General Practice Research

Background:

  • Medical audit is increasingly integrated into UK general practice curricula for medical students.
  • Student perception of the value of audit training remains a subject of debate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate final-year medical students' attitudes and knowledge regarding medical audit after a case-note review exercise.
  • To assess student engagement with audit data collection and feedback sessions.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 128 final-year medical students at the University of Glasgow conducted a case-note review of 10 diabetic patients.
  • Students evaluated process and outcome measures during practice attachments, receiving feedback in a final teaching session.
  • A post-course evaluation assessed student knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of relevance and engagement.

Main Results:

  • 84% of students completed the evaluation. 39% found data collection boring, but 60% found feedback sessions interesting.
  • A majority considered both data collection (57%) and feedback (70%) relevant to their learning.
  • Students reported a statistically significant increase in their knowledge of audit (P < 0.0001).

Conclusions:

  • Medical audit training, including case-note review and feedback, can significantly enhance students' self-reported knowledge and perceived relevance.
  • While challenges exist in student engagement with data collection, interactive feedback sessions are viewed positively.
  • Integrating audit into medical education is a worthwhile endeavor, contributing to quality improvement skills development.
