Summary

This study found no significant differences in prolactin or cortisol responses to d-fenfluramine between panic disorder patients and controls. The findings do not support the serotonin receptor hypersensitivity hypothesis in panic disorder.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neuroendocrine responses to d-fenfluramine in patients with panic disorder.
  • To examine the hypothesis of hypersensitive post-synaptic serotonin receptors in panic disorder.

Main Methods:

  • 16 patients diagnosed with DSM-III-R panic disorder and 14 healthy controls participated.
  • Prolactin and cortisol levels were measured following administration of d-fenfluramine.
  • Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used for statistical analysis.
