Summary

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) added to lung preservation solutions improved lung ultrastructure in rats. This finding suggests VIP could enhance donor lung quality for transplantation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of VIP in improving lung preservation.
  • To assess the impact of VIP on lung tissue ultrastructure after cold storage.

  • Rat lungs were flushed and stored for 24 hours in four different solutions: Krebs, Krebs with VIP, University of Wisconsin (UW), and UW with VIP.
  • Tissue samples were analyzed using light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy.

    Conclusions:

    • VIP significantly enhances the ultrastructure of rat lungs stored in cold preservation solutions for up to 24 hours.
    • VIP may be a valuable additive to pneumoplegic solutions to improve donor lung preservation prior to transplantation.
