Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Macromastia causes significant physical and emotional distress.
  • Symptoms include shoulder grooving, back/neck pain, and nerve compression.
  • Improved self-image and physical function are desired outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of reduction mammoplasty for macromastia.
  • To compare outcomes of the inferior pedicle technique and free nipple graft.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 75 reduction mammoplasty patients.
  • Procedures utilized inferior pedicle technique or free nipple graft.
  • Preoperative symptoms and postoperative complications were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Reduction mammoplasty relieved symptoms like back pain and shoulder grooving.
  • Fat necrosis was the most frequent complication, linked to larger resections.
  • High patient satisfaction was achieved with both surgical methods.

Conclusions:

  • Reduction mammoplasty offers substantial relief for macromastia symptoms.
  • Both inferior pedicle and free nipple graft techniques yield high patient satisfaction.
  • Careful consideration of resection size is important to minimize complications like fat necrosis.
