Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Background:

  • Firearm access is a known risk factor for suicide.
  • Adolescent suicide remains a critical public health concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between firearms in the home and adolescent suicide.
  • To identify specific firearm characteristics that may increase risk.

Main Methods:

  • A matched, case-control study was conducted using a population-based community sample.
  • Sixty-seven adolescent suicide victims were compared with 67 demographically matched living controls.

Main Results:

  • The presence of any gun in the home was significantly associated with adolescent suicide (OR=4.4).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Handguns in the home showed a particularly strong association with suicide (OR=9.4).
  • Loaded handguns were significant risk factors, especially in individuals without apparent psychiatric disorders.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pediatricians should advocate for the removal of firearms from homes with suicidal adolescents.
    • The presence of firearms, particularly handguns, is linked to adolescent suicide risk, even without clear psychiatric illness.
