Summary

Nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) was found in 7% of liver resections, primarily in patients receiving antitumor chemotherapy. This suggests a potential link between chemotherapy and NRH development in liver disease.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) is a rare liver condition.
  • The association between NRH and antitumor chemotherapy requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore potential links between nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) and antitumor chemotherapy.
  • To evaluate liver tissue changes in patients undergoing partial hepatic resections.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 72 partial hepatic resections and 30 control autopsy livers.
  • Histological examination using hematoxylin and eosin, reticulin, and trichrome stains.
  • Immunostaining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and assessment of hepatocyte mitoses and liver cell plate thickness.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • NRH was identified in 5 of 72 resected livers (7%), all of whom had received chemotherapy.
  • These NRH cases represented 15% of patients who received chemotherapy, with 4/5 treated within 2 months prior to surgery.
  • PCNA staining was not a reliable indicator for NRH; hepatocyte mitoses and liver cell plate thickness were more sensitive regeneration markers.

Conclusions:

  • A potential association exists between antitumor chemotherapy and the development of NRH.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced NRH.
  • Hepatocyte mitoses and liver cell plate thickness are more effective indicators of liver regeneration than PCNA.
