Summary

The anterior cingulate cortex has fewer neurons but more complex dendritic structures than the posterior part. This suggests structural differences in the human cingulate cortex are linked to function.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Human Anatomy
  • Cell Biology

Background:

  • The human cingulate cortex has distinct anterior and posterior regions.
  • These regions exhibit differences in neuronal density.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between neuronal packing density and neuropil complexity in the anterior and posterior cingulate cortex.
  • To test the hypothesis that lower neuron density in the anterior cingulate cortex correlates with increased dendritic complexity.

Main Methods:

  • Golgi study analyzing dendritic arborizations of layer V neurons.
  • Comparison of dendritic structures between anterior and posterior cingulate cortex samples.

Main Results:

  • Neurons in the anterior cingulate cortex showed more primary and secondary basal dendrites compared to the posterior part.
  • A higher complexity of dendritic arborization in the anterior cingulate cortex was associated with lower cell density and a larger neuropil compartment.
  • The posterior cingulate cortex exhibited a lower degree of dendritic arborization and higher cell packing density.

Conclusions:

  • Structural differences, including dendritic complexity and cell packing density, exist between the anterior and posterior human cingulate cortex.
  • These anatomical variations are likely associated with functional specializations of the two cingulate regions.
