Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Dental and Oral Surgery

Background:

  • Class III skeletal pattern is more prevalent in Japanese populations compared to Caucasians.
  • Glossectomy (tongue reduction) is an uncommon procedure in Japan.

Observation:

  • Three patient cases are presented: an adult with bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion, an adult with Class III malocclusion, and a 10-year-old with Class III malocclusion and posterior crossbite.
  • All patients underwent treatment that included glossectomy.

Findings:

  • The study demonstrates the application of glossectomy in managing complex orthodontic and skeletal issues.
  • Glossectomy was utilized as part of the treatment strategy for diverse malocclusion types and skeletal patterns.

Implications:

  • This case series highlights glossectomy as a potential, albeit uncommon, treatment modality in specific orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery contexts.
  • Further investigation into the efficacy and indications for glossectomy in treating Class III malocclusion and related conditions is warranted.
