Insights
A rare heart anomaly, where the left circumflex coronary artery originates abnormally, may run in families. This study presents three cases suggesting a potential familial link for this coronary artery anomaly.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Medical Genetics
Background:
- The anomalous origin of the left circumflex coronary artery (LCX) from the right sinus of Valsalva or the right coronary artery is a recognized congenital coronary artery anomaly.
- While generally considered an isolated finding, its potential for familial occurrence has not been extensively studied.
Observation:
- This report details three distinct cases exhibiting the anomalous origin of the LCX.
- In these cases, multiple family members presented with this specific coronary artery anomaly, suggesting a possible inherited pattern.
Findings:
- The observed familial clustering of the left circumflex coronary artery anomaly is a novel observation.
- This familial aggregation suggests a potential genetic predisposition or shared environmental factors contributing to the anomaly's development.
Implications:
- These findings warrant further investigation into the genetic basis of coronary artery anomalies.
- Understanding the familial association could aid in risk stratification and genetic counseling for affected families.
- Further research may elucidate specific genetic markers or inheritance patterns for this anomaly.
Abstract:
Origin of the left circumflex coronary artery from the right sinus of Valsalva or the right coronary artery is a well-described anomaly. We report 3 cases which suggest a familial association of this anomaly. The familial clustering that we report has not been previously demonstrated.
