Ectopic thyroid tissue, rarely found below the diaphragm, is exceptionally rare in the hepatic porta. This case report details the successful surgical removal and histological confirmation of aberrant thyroid tissue in this unusual location.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Embryology

Background:

  • Ectopic thyroid tissue is uncommon, typically located in the neck or chest.
  • Thyroid tissue caudal to the diaphragm is exceptionally rare.
  • Accessory thyroid tissue in the hepatic porta region is exceedingly rare, with only one prior autopsy case reported.

Observation:

  • A 58-year-old woman presented with an indistinct tumor in the hepatic porta.
  • The tumor was successfully surgically removed.
  • Histological examination confirmed the presence of aberrant normal thyroid tissue.

Findings:

  • The resected tissue was identified as normal thyroid tissue.
  • This represents a rare instance of ectopic thyroid tissue in the hepatic porta.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The embryological development of the thyroid gland may explain this rare finding.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known spectrum of ectopic thyroid gland presentations.
    • Highlights the importance of considering rare ectopic tissues in differential diagnoses of abdominal masses.
    • Contributes to the understanding of thyroid gland embryogenesis and developmental anomalies.
