Intestinal anisakiasis: first reported case in Thailand

Background:

Intestinal anisakiasis is a foodborne parasitic zoonosis caused by the ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood contaminated with Anisakis larvae.
Symptoms can range from mild gastrointestinal discomfort to acute abdominal obstruction, mimicking other surgical emergencies.

Observation:

A patient presented with symptoms indicative of acute abdominal obstruction.
Diagnostic procedures involved the examination of tissue sections from a resected segment of the small intestine.

Findings:

The parasite Anisakis simplex was definitively identified within the resected intestinal tissue.
This case represents the first documented instance of intestinal anisakiasis in Thailand.

Implications:

This report highlights the potential for intestinal anisakiasis in Thailand, emphasizing the need for increased awareness among clinicians and the public.
Accurate diagnosis through parasitic identification in tissue is crucial for appropriate management.
