Background:

  • Propofol is a common anesthetic agent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the cardiopulmonary effects of propofol as the sole anesthetic agent in rabbits over an 8-hour period.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of long-term propofol infusion in this species.

Main Methods:

  • Ten ventilated New Zealand White rabbits received continuous intravenous propofol infusion for 8 hours.
  • Cardiopulmonary parameters (heart rate, blood pressure, blood gases, pH, oxygen saturation, PCV, temperature) were continuously monitored.
  • Control group received Intralipid 10% infusion.

Main Results:

  • Achieved only light planes of anesthesia with a mean propofol infusion rate of 0.876 mg/kg/min.
  • Hypotension and hypoxemia were frequently observed.
  • Four rabbits did not survive; recovery was slow in survivors.
  • Control infusions showed no adverse effects.

Conclusions:

  • Propofol as a sole intravenous agent is not recommended for long-term anesthesia in rabbits.
  • Oxygen supplementation is crucial for improving anesthetic quality and outcomes.
