Background:

  • Tourette's Syndrome (TS) is associated with potential neurochemical abnormalities.
  • Trace amines are being investigated for their role in TS pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of trace amines in Tourette's Syndrome.
  • To examine neurochemical differences between TS patients and healthy children.

Main Methods:

  • Combined neuropsychological and neurochemical measurements.
  • Assessed urinary levels of beta-phenylethylamine (PEA) and phenylalanine.
  • Measured urinary indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and other neurochemicals (MHPG, normetanephrine, 5-HT, tyramine).

Main Results:

  • TS patients exhibited decreased urinary PEA and plasma phenylalanine levels.
  • Lower urinary PEA correlated with higher Tourette's Syndrome Global Scale (TSGS) scores.
  • TS patients with low PEA showed poorer performance on neuropsychological tests.
  • Significantly lower urinary IAA levels were found in TS patients compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Evidence suggests trace amine dysregulation, particularly PEA and tryptamine pathways, in Tourette's Syndrome.
  • Neurochemical deficits may contribute to the neuropsychological impairments observed in some TS patients.
