Summary

Nipple discharge cytology has low sensitivity for detecting breast cancer. However, histopathology of resected ducts reveals common benign conditions like dysplasia and papillomas, with early carcinoma diagnosis yielding good surgical outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Breast Imaging

Background:

  • Nipple discharge is a concerning symptom in women.
  • Distinguishing benign from malignant causes requires accurate diagnostic methods.
  • Early detection of breast cancer is crucial for treatment success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of nipple discharge cytology for breast cancer.
  • To determine the histopathological findings in women with nipple discharge and no palpable tumors.
  • To assess the effectiveness of early diagnosis and surgical treatment for breast carcinoma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 100 cases of women with various nipple discharges.
  • Cytologic examination of nipple discharge.
  • Resection of main galactophorous ducts and biopsy of breast parenchyma.
  • Histopathological analysis of resected tissues.

Main Results:

  • Cytologic examination sensitivity for carcinoma was 16.6%.
  • Histopathology revealed 61% mammary dysplasia, 33% intraductal papillomas, and 6% carcinomas.
  • Early diagnosis of carcinoma led to favorable outcomes with radical surgical treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Cytology of nipple discharge has limited sensitivity for breast cancer detection.
  • Histopathology is essential for diagnosing underlying breast conditions causing nipple discharge.
  • Prompt surgical intervention for diagnosed breast carcinoma improves patient prognosis.
