Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Laparoscopic nephrectomy is established for benign renal disease.
  • Its use for renal malignancy is less explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for renal tumors.
  • To assess oncologic outcomes in patients with kidney cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Eight patients with renal tumors underwent laparoscopic radical nephrectomy.
  • Tumors were excised within Gerota's fascia; adrenalectomy was performed en bloc in 3 cases.
  • Follow-up included clinical and radiographic tumor surveillance.

Main Results:

  • No clinical or radiographic evidence of tumor recurrence was observed.

  • Follow-up ranged from 7 to 35 months (mean 14 months).
  • Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is a practical, minimally invasive approach for select renal tumors.
    • Adherence to oncologic principles ensures safety and efficacy.
    • This technique offers a less invasive alternative for kidney cancer surgery.
