Summary

Madelung disease, a benign symmetrical lipomatosis, presents unique MR imaging findings. Short-TR/TE sequences effectively visualize cervical lipomas and their relation to vital structures, with fat-suppression offering no added benefit.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Madelung disease, also known as benign symmetrical lipomatosis, is a rare condition characterized by excessive non-browning fat accumulation.
  • It primarily affects middle-aged men and is often associated with chronic alcohol abuse.

Observation:

  • This report details two cases of Madelung disease.
  • The study focuses on the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging characteristics of the condition.

Findings:

  • Short-repetition-time/short-echo-time (TR/TE) MR sequences are highly effective in demonstrating the cervical lipomatous masses.
  • These sequences clearly delineate the relationship between the lipomas and adjacent critical structures, including the airway and carotid space neurovascular bundles.
  • Fat-suppression techniques did not provide additional diagnostic value in evaluating these lipomatous accumulations.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Accurate MR imaging is crucial for understanding the anatomical extent of Madelung disease.
  • Knowledge of these imaging findings aids in differentiating Madelung disease from other conditions and in surgical planning.
  • Further research into the specific benefits of various MR sequences for lipomatosis is warranted.
