Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Procedures
  • Strabismus Management

Background:

  • Cataracts and strabismus often require surgical intervention.
  • Congenital exotropia presents challenges in visual alignment.
  • Combined procedures aim for efficiency and improved outcomes.

Observation:

  • A patient with cataracts and congenital exotropia underwent sequential combined surgeries.
  • Procedures involved lateral rectus recession and cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation.
  • The patient experienced a benign postoperative course for both eyes.

Findings:

  • The combined surgical approach was performed successfully in both eyes (OU).
  • Postoperative strabismus resolved completely after the second surgical procedure.
  • The patient's vision, binocularity, and appearance were restored.

Implications:

  • Combined cataract and strabismus surgery is a viable option for select patients.
  • This approach can effectively address multiple ocular conditions simultaneously.
  • It offers potential benefits in terms of recovery time and functional restoration.
