Summary

Osteoid osteomas can present with unusual soft tissue edema on MRI scans. This finding should not be mistaken for a more aggressive condition, ensuring accurate diagnosis of osteoid osteoma.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Radiology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Osteoid osteomas are benign bone tumors.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial to avoid unnecessary aggressive treatments.

Observation:

  • Four cases of osteoid osteomas were reviewed.
  • An uncharacteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) finding of soft tissue edema was noted in these cases.

Findings:

  • Soft tissue edema on MRI can be an atypical presentation of osteoid osteoma.
  • This finding may mimic more aggressive pathologies.

Implications:

  • Radiologists and orthopedic surgeons should consider osteoid osteoma in the differential diagnosis even with soft tissue edema.
  • Misinterpretation could lead to incorrect treatment pathways, delaying appropriate care for benign osteoid osteoma.
