Symbiosis00:58

Symbiosis

27.8K
Symbiotic relationships are long-term, close interactions between individuals of different species that affect the distribution and abundance of those species. When a relationship is beneficial to both species, this is called mutualism. When the relationship is beneficial to one species but neither beneficial nor harmful to the other species, this is called commensalism. When one organism is harmed to benefit another, the relationship is known as parasitism. These types of relationships often...

Blood Types

18.1K
Human blood is classified into different types based on the presence of antigens on the red blood cell's surface and antibodies in the plasma. Proper identification of blood type is essential for successful blood transfusion. The International Society of Blood Transfusion has identified 38 human blood types based on the surface antigens on the red blood cells. The most common types are ABO, Rh, and MNS blood types.

Blood Transfusion and Agglutination

13.0K
Blood transfusion is a therapeutic measure to restore the blood volume after extensive blood loss due to an accident or a medical procedure. Blood transfusion involves drawing a certain amount of blood from a suitable donor and infusing it into the recipient.
History
The history of blood transfusion dates back to the 17th century, when early attempts were made in animals. In 1818 James Blundell, a British doctor, performed the first successful human blood transfusion. Later in 1900, Karl...

The ABO Blood Group01:12

The ABO Blood Group

8.6K
The ABO blood group system is a critical element of transfusion medicine, essential for determining blood compatibility in transfusions and organ transplants. It is based on specific antigens, or agglutinogens, present on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs) and corresponding antibodies, or agglutinins, in the blood plasma.
Antigens in the ABO Blood Group System
Antigens are substances that can trigger an immune response, leading to the production of antibodies. In the ABO blood group system,...

Rh Blood Group01:19

Rh Blood Group

4.3K
The Rhesus (Rh) antigen is crucial in determining blood groups and ensuring compatibility during blood transfusions.

Blood Typing

5.9K
Understanding an individual's blood group is a critical component of transfusion medicine. It ensures compatibility in blood transfusions, organ transplants, and even during pregnancy. Determining these blood groups involves the ABO and Rh blood typing systems, utilizing specific antigens and corresponding anti-sera to identify an individual's blood type.
Antigens are protein molecules that reside on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs). The ABO and Rh blood typing systems target...

Summary

This study found no link between ABO blood groups and lymphatic filariasis (LF). Age, however, was associated with microfilaraemia and symptomatic LF disease.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Statistics
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a significant public health concern.
  • A controversial association between LF and ABO blood groups has been suggested.
  • Large-scale patient data is needed to clarify this relationship.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the controversial relationship between lymphatic filariasis and ABO blood groups.
  • To determine if ABO blood groups are risk factors for LF.
  • To analyze the association of age with LF occurrence.

Main Methods:

  • Statistical analysis of 1444 individuals.
  • Determined ABO blood group, microfilaraemia, and symptomatic disease status.
  • Used Chi-square test and logistic regression to assess associations.

Main Results:

  • ABO blood groups were not identified as risk factors for patent parasitaemia or filarial disease.
  • Age was significantly associated with the occurrence of microfilaraemia.
  • Age also showed an association with symptomatic LF disease.

Conclusions:

  • ABO blood groups are not associated with the occurrence of bancroftian filariasis.
  • Age is a relevant factor in microfilaraemia and symptomatic LF.
  • Findings clarify the non-association between blood groups and LF.
