Background:

  • To investigate the impact of age and gender on tear break-up time (TBUT).
  • To compare TBUT in two distinct Chinese populations: Hong Kong Chinese (HK-Chinese) and Singaporean Chinese (S-Chinese).

Main Methods:

  • Employed the conventional fluorescein-instillation technique to measure TBUT.
  • Recruited 92 asymptomatic HK-Chinese and 76 asymptomatic S-Chinese subjects.
  • Analyzed TBUT data in relation to age and gender within each group.

  • Mean TBUT was 7.8 ± 2.4 s for HK-Chinese and 6.5 ± 4.0 s for S-Chinese.
