Summary

Renal hemangiomas, rare kidney tumors, can cause severe bleeding. Embolization, a minimally invasive procedure, successfully treated a patient with a central renal hemangioma, preserving kidney function.

Background:

  • Renal hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors of the kidney.
  • Historically, surgical nephrectomy was the primary treatment for symptomatic renal hemangiomas.
  • These tumors can present with severe complications such as hematuria.

Observation:

  • A 37-year-old female presented with severe hematuria.
  • Selective renal angiography identified a centrally located renal hemangioma with arteriovenous shunting.
  • The patient had no significant past medical history.

Findings:

  • Arterial embolization using five coils was performed to occlude the artery supplying the arteriovenous shunt.
  • Post-embolization isotope renography demonstrated preserved and equal function of both kidneys.
  • The patient experienced mild hypertension as the only noted side-effect.

Implications:

  • Embolization offers a viable, kidney-sparing alternative to nephrectomy for renal hemangiomas.
  • Minimally invasive treatment can effectively manage severe hematuria from renal vascular malformations.
  • Further research into long-term outcomes and management strategies for renal hemangiomas is warranted.
