Summary

This study investigated environmental exposures in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients in western Norway. No significant link was found between MS and exposure to organic solvents or related chemical compounds.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease with complex etiology.
  • Environmental factors are suspected contributors to MS development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential association between occupational exposure to organic solvents and the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS).

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted in western Norway.
  • Included 155 patients with clinical onset of MS (1976-1986) and 200 controls.
  • Assessed exposure to organic solvents, welding, and other chemical compounds.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in exposure to organic solvents between MS patients and controls.
