Summary

Children with asthma show increased total lung capacity (TLC) compared to healthy peers. Lung growth during adolescence in asthmatics is slower, but similar to controls when adjusted for height growth, suggesting enhanced lung development during childhood asthma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if total lung capacity (TLC) is elevated in individuals with a history of childhood asthma.
  • To investigate the association between childhood asthma and lung growth during adolescence.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study comparing 53 children with asthma to 106 matched healthy controls over a mean of 29 months.
  • Measurements included total lung capacity (TLC) and stature, with adjustments for pubertal development and height growth.
