Summary

Normal cardiac values in Greyhounds are higher than previously thought, particularly left ventricular posterior wall thickness. This study establishes breed-specific echocardiographic data for Greyhounds.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Cardiology
  • Comparative Physiology

Background:

  • Echocardiography is crucial for assessing cardiac function.
  • Existing echocardiographic data often comes from mixed breeds, potentially misrepresenting breed-specific norms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish normal cardiac values for the Greyhound breed using echocardiography.
  • To compare these values against existing literature.

Main Methods:

  • Serial B- and M-mode echocardiography was conducted.
  • Cardiac measurements were systematically recorded in Greyhounds.

Main Results:

  • Normal cardiac values for Greyhounds were determined.
  • These values were generally greater than those predicted from previous studies on other breeds.
  • Left ventricular posterior wall thickness (systole and diastole) was consistently greater in Greyhounds.

Conclusions:

  • Greyhounds exhibit distinct normal cardiac dimensions.
  • Breed-specific echocardiographic reference ranges are essential for accurate diagnosis in Greyhounds.
  • Previous research may underestimate cardiac size and function in this breed.
