Summary

Constant thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) infusions did not change thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) pulse frequency. However, TRH did increase TSH pulse amplitude, suggesting TRH modulates TSH release rather than generating its pulses.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in the generation of TSH pulses.
  • To determine if constant TRH infusion affects TSH pulse frequency or amplitude.

  • Healthy and treated hypothyroid subjects received constant infusions of TRH at varying doses (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 microgram/min) over 48 hours.
