Summary
High levels of alpha-human Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) may cause hemoconcentration in preeclampsia by increasing fluid loss and shifting fluid to tissues. This peptide also counteracts the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which is often overactive in pregnancy and preeclampsia.
