    Area of Science:

    • Healthcare Management
    • Public Health
    • Maternal and Child Health

    Background:

    • Effective breastfeeding support is crucial for maternal and infant health outcomes.
    • Standardized protocols can guide healthcare professionals in promoting breastfeeding.
    • Assessing the impact of such protocols on knowledge is essential for evidence-based practice.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a standardized breastfeeding protocol on the knowledge of health professionals and mothers.
    • To assess changes in breastfeeding knowledge before and after protocol implementation.

    Main Methods:

    • A pre- and post-test design was employed in three hospitals.
    • Breastfeeding knowledge was measured in health professionals and mothers.
    • A standard breastfeeding protocol was implemented between the pre- and post-tests.

    Main Results:

    • A statistically significant increase in knowledge scores was observed for both health professionals and mothers.
    • The actual increase in knowledge scores was minimal (less than 2% for professionals, 1% for mothers).
    • Overall knowledge scores remained low, particularly among health professionals, indicating limited understanding.

    Conclusions:

    • Implementation of the breastfeeding protocol did not significantly improve knowledge scores in the short term.
    • The protocol did, however, lead to positive changes in hospital policies and procedures.
    • These policy changes may have a sustained, indirect influence on future knowledge and breastfeeding practices.
