Clinicopathologic correlation of microphthalmos with cyst

G O Waring, A M Roth, M M Rodrigues

    American Journal of Ophthalmology
    |November 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Congenital cystic eye, a rare condition, involves microphthalmos with cysts. Histopathology revealed neuroectodermal proliferation from embryonic fissures, leading to ocular abnormalities.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Developmental Biology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Microphthalmos with cyst is a rare congenital ocular anomaly.
    • Understanding its pathogenesis is crucial for diagnosis and management.

    Observation:

    • Examined four eyes from three patients with microphthalmos and associated cysts.
    • Observed anterior segment abnormalities, retinal disorganization, gliosis, and choroidal/scleral coloboma.

    Findings:

    • A cyst connected to the coloboma showed a fibrovascular outer layer and gliotic neuroectodermal inner layer.
    • The cyst likely arises from neuroectodermal tissue proliferation at an open embryonic fissure.

    Implications:

    • This study elucidates the histopathological features and probable origin of microphthalmos with cyst.
    • Findings may guide future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for this condition.
