    Summary

Borrelia infection, often linked to Lyme disease, was studied in pregnant women with recurrent spontaneous abortions. While most cases were negative, two women with prior exposure showed positive serology without typical Lyme disease symptoms.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Obstetrics & Gynecology
    • Serology

    Background:

    • Recurrent spontaneous abortion is a concern in reproductive health.
    • Borrelia infection is the causative agent of Lyme disease.
    • The study examines Borrelia infection in pregnant women without clinical Lyme disease symptoms.

    Observation:

    • The study included pregnant women with a history of two or more spontaneous abortions.
    • No overt clinical signs of Lyme disease were present in the study cohort.
    • Epidemiologic data and serologic findings were analyzed.

    Findings:

    • Out of 42 cases investigated, Borrelia infection results were negative.
    • Two cases with positive epidemiologic data showed positive serologic findings for Borrelia.
    • These positive cases occurred in women without clinical manifestations of Lyme disease.

    Implications:

    • Serologic testing for Borrelia may be considered in pregnant women with recurrent spontaneous abortions, even without typical Lyme disease symptoms.
    • Early detection and management of Borrelia infection could potentially prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the role of Borrelia in recurrent spontaneous abortions.
