Area of Science:

  • Colorectal Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Laparoscopic techniques are increasingly utilized in colorectal surgery.
  • Assessing the safety and efficacy of laparoscopically assisted colon resection is crucial, especially for elderly patients and those with malignancy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopically assisted colon resection in a cohort of patients with benign and malignant large bowel diseases.
  • To assess the feasibility, safety, and postoperative recovery associated with this surgical approach.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 20 cases undergoing laparoscopically assisted colon resection.
  • Procedure involved laparoscopic mobilization, delivery of the colon through a small incision, and resection with stapled anastomosis.
  • Malignant lesions were often mobilized via an accessory incision directly over the lesion.

Main Results:

  • No operative-related mortality was observed in the study group.
  • Postoperative recovery was rapid, with nasogastric tube suction required in only one patient.
  • Average return of gastrointestinal function was 2.5 days, and average hospital stay was under 5 days.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopically assisted colon resection is a safe and effective surgical option for various large bowel conditions, including malignancy.
  • The technique is well-tolerated, particularly in elderly patients, leading to favorable postoperative outcomes and reduced hospital stay.
