Summary

Gastric emptying time (GET1/2) is significantly prolonged in moderate-to-severe chronic atrophic gastritis, gastric antrum cancer, antral peptic ulcers, and diabetic patients with autonomic dysfunction. Duodenal ulcer patients exhibit faster gastric emptying.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Nuclear Medicine
  • Physiology of Gastric Motility

Context:

  • Gastric emptying is a crucial physiological process influencing nutrient absorption and drug delivery.
  • Abnormalities in gastric motility are associated with various gastrointestinal and systemic diseases.
  • Radionuclide gamma-photography provides a quantitative method to assess gastric emptying.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the half gastric emptying time (GET1/2) in patients with different gastrointestinal conditions and diabetes.
  • To compare GET1/2 values between patient groups and healthy controls using a standardized solid meal.

Summary:

  • Half gastric emptying time (GET1/2) was measured using 99mTc-resin solid meal.
  • Significantly prolonged GET1/2 was observed in moderate-to-severe chronic atrophic gastritis (70.39 min), gastric antrum cancer (89.06 min), and antral peptic ulcers (76.62 min) compared to normal controls (51.62 min).
  • Duodenal ulcer patients showed a shorter GET1/2 (42.49 min), while mild chronic atrophic gastritis and gastric corpus/fundus/cardia cancers did not show significant differences.
  • Diabetic patients exhibited prolonged GET1/2 (70.01 min), particularly those with autonomic nervous dysfunction (84.03 min).

Impact:

  • Findings highlight specific conditions associated with delayed gastric emptying, aiding in diagnosis and management.
  • Demonstrates the utility of radionuclide imaging in quantifying gastric motility disorders.
  • Suggests potential implications for therapeutic strategies targeting gastric emptying in affected patient populations.
