Context:

  • IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a common glomerular kidney disease.
  • Cellular immunity plays a role in IgAN pathogenesis.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate serum and peripheral blood lymphocyte supernatant levels of Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF alpha) in IgA nephropathy patients.
  • To investigate the correlation between TNF alpha levels and disease severity, specifically sclerosis, in IgAN.

Summary:

  • Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF alpha) levels were significantly higher in the serum and supernatant of peripheral blood lymphocytes from IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients compared to controls (P < 0.01).
  • TNF alpha levels were markedly increased in IgAN patients with sclerosis (P < 0.01).
  • ELISA with TNF alpha monoclonal antibody (T5 & E6) was used for quantification.
