[Pancreatic pain: a clinical-experimental study]

M Rehner, D Schilling, N Soehendra

    Zeitschrift Fur Gastroenterologie
    |November 1, 1976

    Summary

Severe pain during endoscopic-radiologic pancreography in patients may stem from pancreatic gland ischemia. Lingual nitroglycerin effectively relieved this pain, suggesting a vascular origin for pancreatic pain.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Vascular Biology
    • Pain Management

    Context:

    • Endoscopic-radiologic pancreatography is a diagnostic procedure.
    • This procedure can cause severe pancreatic pain in patients.
    • The origin of this pain is often unclear.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the cause of severe pain during endoscopic-radiologic pancreatography.
    • To evaluate the efficacy of nitroglycerin in alleviating this pain.
    • To explore the potential role of vascular reactions and ischemia in pancreatic pain.

    Summary:

    • Twenty-six patients undergoing endoscopic-radiologic pancreatography experienced severe pancreatic pain.
    • Lingual nitroglycerin provided immediate and sustained pain relief.
    • The findings suggest that pancreatic pain during this procedure may be caused by vascular reactions and ischemia.

    Impact:

    • This study highlights a potential therapeutic strategy for managing procedural pain.
    • It suggests that nitroglycerin could be a valuable tool for patients experiencing acute pancreatitis.
    • Further controlled studies are warranted to confirm these findings in acute pancreatitis patients.
