Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Gastroenterology
  • Colorectal Physiology

Context:

  • Chronic constipation affects many children.
  • Most toddlers respond to conventional treatments.
  • Complex cases require specialized management.

Purpose:

  • To outline diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for pediatric constipation.
  • To highlight the role of biofeedback in specific cases.

Summary:

  • Conventional therapy is effective for most toddlers with constipation.
  • Young infants or older children with severe impaction need specialized care.
  • Biofeedback training is beneficial for children exhibiting paradoxical external anal sphincter contraction during defecation.

Impact:

  • Improved management protocols for pediatric constipation.
  • Enhanced understanding of biofeedback efficacy in treating functional defecation disorders.
  • Better outcomes for children with chronic or severe constipation.
