Summary

Perfluorotributylamine (FTBA) and perflubron emulsions show promise for 19F echo planar imaging. Perflubron is particularly suitable due to long spin-spin relaxation times, enabling high-resolution fluorine imaging.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Fluorine Chemistry

Background:

  • Echo planar imaging (EPI) is a rapid MRI technique.
  • Fluorine-19 (19F) imaging offers unique contrast properties.
  • Perfluorinated compounds are being explored as contrast agents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate perfluorotributylamine (FTBA) and perflubron emulsions for 19F EPI.
  • To assess their potential as contrast agents in MRI.

Main Methods:

  • Preparation of FTBA and perflubron emulsions.
  • Acquisition of 19F EPI data in a phantom and in vivo (mice).
  • Analysis of spin-spin relaxation times (T2) of CF3 resonances.

Main Results:

  • Both FTBA and perflubron emulsions produced fluorine images.
  • Perflubron demonstrated longer spin-spin relaxation times compared to FTBA.
  • High-resolution, thin-slice images were acquired rapidly (26.6 ms).

Conclusions:

  • Perfluorinated emulsions, especially perflubron, are viable for 19F EPI.
  • Long T2 relaxation times of CF3 groups are beneficial for EPI.
  • This technique holds potential for advanced fluorine-based imaging applications.
