Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Degenerative Diseases

Background:

  • Angioid streaks are a pathological finding in the fundus.
  • Understanding the natural history of angioid streaks is crucial for patient management.

Observation:

  • Retrospective analysis of fundus images from 111 subjects with angioid streaks.
  • Earliest signs observed at age 8 as narrow, radial, discontinuous hypopigmented streaks.
  • Progressive enlargement in length and width of streaks over time.

Findings:

  • Angioid streaks evolve dynamically, not being congenital.
  • Progression leads to end-stage complications like macular degeneration and choroidal sclerosis.
  • The process indicates an underlying retinochoroidal degenerative condition.

Implications:

  • Highlights the progressive nature of angioid streaks.
  • Suggests the need for long-term monitoring of affected individuals.
  • Provides insights into the pathogenesis of retinochoroidal degeneration.
