Summary

Vertebral compression fractures are linked to reduced trabecular connectivity, not just bone thinning. This study found fewer trabecular connections in patients with fractures compared to controls with similar bone volume.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate trabecular microstructure differences in patients with vertebral compression fractures.
  • To compare trabecular connectivity between patients and healthy controls.
  • To determine if reduced connectivity or bone thinning is characteristic of vertebral fracture syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • Transiliac biopsies from 90 patients with crush fracture syndrome and 34 controls.
  • Matching patients and controls for trabecular bone volume (BV/TV).
  • Applying three methods to assess trabecular connectivity: Parfitt method, node/free end counting, and marrow space star volume.

  • Patients showed decreased trabecular number, increased separation, and increased thickness compared to controls.
