Summary

High levels of dysfunctional attitudes correlate with depression severity and treatment response. Fluoxetine treatment significantly reduced these attitudes in major depressive disorder patients, supporting a state-dependent view.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Dysfunctional attitudes are linked to increased depression severity.
  • These attitudes may predict poorer outcomes in pharmacological depression treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between dysfunctional attitudes and depression severity.
  • To examine changes in dysfunctional attitudes following fluoxetine treatment in major depressive disorder patients.

Main Methods:

  • 115 outpatients with major depressive disorder were assessed using the Cognitions Questionnaire (CQ) and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS).
  • 67 patients were reassessed after 8 weeks of fluoxetine treatment.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Dysfunctional attitudes were associated with depression severity both pre- and post-treatment.
  • Significant linear decreases in dysfunctional attitudes were observed with depression treatment.
  • Negative thinking and dysfunctional attitudes did not predict the degree of depressive symptom improvement.
  • Conclusions:

    • Findings support a state-dependent interpretation of dysfunctional attitudes.
    • Fluoxetine treatment led to significant reductions in dysfunctional attitudes in major depressive disorder.
