Summary

Oral glutamine (Gln) supplementation does not increase ammonia levels in rats with systemically drained small bowel transplantation (SBTx). Gln-enriched diets may be beneficial for SBTx patients, as they are not contraindicated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if oral glutamine supplementation increases plasma ammonia in rats with systemically drained SBTx.
  • To assess the safety and potential benefits of Gln-enriched diets in SBTx models.

Main Methods:

  • Lewis rats underwent isologous SBTx and received isonitrogenous, isocaloric diets with varying Gln content (0%, 12.5%, 25%).
  • Plasma ammonia (NH4) and glutamine (Gln) levels were measured and compared to control groups.
