Summary

Aerobic exercise significantly increases beta-endorphin levels, but this change is not linked to exercise dependence. This finding suggests that the euphoric effects of exercise may not be the primary driver of exercise addiction.

Background:

  • Aerobic exercise is known to elevate beta-endorphin levels, potentially contributing to exercise-induced euphoria.
  • This euphoric effect has been hypothesized as a mechanism for exercise dependence.
  • However, a direct link between plasma beta-endorphin changes and exercise dependence remains unestablished.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between changes in plasma beta-endorphin concentrations and the degree of exercise dependence.
  • To determine if elevated beta-endorphin levels after aerobic activity correlate with a tendency towards exercise dependence.

Main Methods:

  • Eight women experienced in aerobic dance underwent an exercise dependence assessment.
  • Plasma beta-endorphin levels were measured before and after a 45-minute aerobic dance session.

  • A paired t-test analyzed pre- and post-exercise endorphin levels, and correlation analysis examined the relationship with dependence scores.

    • While aerobic exercise demonstrably elevates plasma beta-endorphin, this physiological response does not appear to be associated with exercise dependence.
    • The findings suggest that factors other than beta-endorphin-mediated euphoria may underlie the development of exercise dependence.
