Area of Science:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Myocutaneous flaps are established, safe options for head and neck oncological defect reconstruction.
  • The pectoralis major myocutaneous flap is widely used but has limitations in rotation and donor site aesthetics, especially for females.

Observation:

  • Growing interest in the posterior trapezius myocutaneous flap (PTMF) as a viable alternative.
  • PTMF demonstrates value in specific head and neck reconstruction scenarios.

Findings:

  • The posterior trapezius myocutaneous flap (PTMF) is presented as a valuable alternative for head and neck reconstruction.
  • Detailed experience with PTMF from the University of São Paulo is reported.

Implications:

  • PTMF expands reconstructive options for head and neck oncological defects.
