Background:

  • Recent studies suggest Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) provirus detection in mycosis fungoides and T-cell anaplastic large-cell lymphoma lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and prevalence of HTLV-I sequences in various lymphoid lesions.
  • To compare HTLV-I detection rates across different lymphoma subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect HTLV-I gag, pol, and pX sequences in biopsies from 59 patients.
  • Sequence analysis was performed on amplified products to confirm homology to HTLV-I.

Conclusions:

  • HTLV-I sequences are present in a notable proportion of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma cases.
  • The etiological role of HTLV-I in the pathogenesis of these neoplasms requires further elucidation.
