  • To determine if type II collagen autoimmunity plays a role in Ménière's disease.

  • Solid-phase, double-antibody, enzyme-linked, immunoassay used.
  • Antibody levels measured in 37 Ménière's disease patients and 20 controls.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in antibody levels to type I or type II collagen was found between patients and controls.
  • Findings do not support the hypothesis of type II collagen autoimmunity in Ménière's disease.

Conclusions:

  • The study does not support the theory that type II collagen autoimmunity causes Ménière's disease.
  • Further research may be needed to explore other potential causes of Ménière's disease.
