Moscovitch's (1979) proposition suggests cerebral asymmetry impacts later visual processing, not early perceptual stages.
Previous evidence indicates certain visual forms may elicit opposing laterality effects.

Purpose of the Study:

To test Moscovitch's proposition regarding cerebral asymmetry and visual processing stages.
To investigate laterality effects on both correct detections and illusory conjunctions.

Main Methods:

Two visual half-field experiments using brief displays of differing form sizes.
Assessed laterality effects using detection scores and perceptual discriminability (d' scores).
Experiment 1: Single form types (rectangles/triangles) with specific targets. Experiment 2: Simultaneous presentation of small and large forms.

Main Results:

A significant hemifield x size interaction was found for correct detections and discriminability in Experiment 1.
No laterality effects were observed for illusory conjunctions or their associated d' scores in Experiment 1.
Experiment 2 yielded no observed laterality effects.

Conclusions:

Early preattentive visual feature extraction appears to be non-lateralized.
Integrative mechanisms, such as focal attention, may exhibit hemispheric specialization.
