Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Fistulous communications involving the uterus are infrequently documented in medical literature.
  • Septic abortions, particularly those induced by foreign bodies, pose significant risks for severe complications.

Observation:

  • This paper presents a rare case of a uterocutaneous fistula.
  • The fistula developed subsequent to a septic abortion procedure.

Findings:

  • The complication arose after the introduction of a Laminaria tent into the uterus for abortion induction.
  • This represents the first reported instance of a uterocutaneous fistula linked to this specific induction method.

Implications:

  • Highlights the potential for rare but serious complications following uterine interventions.
  • Emphasizes the need for vigilance in managing septic abortions and their sequelae.
  • Suggests a need for further investigation into the mechanisms and prevention of such fistulas.
