Summary

Ancient DNA analysis of skeletal remains reveals that four primary mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineages were present in pre-Columbian Amerindian populations. This study supports the theory of a limited number of founding mtDNA lineages during the initial peopling of the Americas.
